Decision Making is Educational
Happy Resolutions for the New Year
A new year is merely a natural phenomenon. It is the result of one complete orbit of the Earth around the Sun.
The same pattern of a new year happens again and again, day after day, year after year, generation after generation. The sun rises and sets, seeds are sown and harvested, the human life cycle begins, grows, reproduces and passes.
The wisdom of man follows Nature to ring in the New Year at exactly 12am, and not 11:58pm.
And the creativity of man has chosen to mark the new year with a New Year’s Resolution.
Just like we have linked Christmas with Santa Claus, birthdays with birthday cakes and wish-making, and the Chinese New Year with red envelopes and well-wishes.
Why do we choose to mark many of the turning points of our life with special celebrations, ceremonies, and wishes?
Why did my daughter at the age of nine, wonder about her own New Year’s Resolution? Do children have serious matters to resolve like adults? Or are children just following the patterns and habits of life which adults have instilled on them?
Doesn’t matter really. We all just want to know that realities can turn into ideals. We all just want to have hope that things can and will be different.
Even if we like to believe that we are unique and different, the amazing thing is that we are really all the same. We have so much in common.
Your today is my today, your tomorrow is my tomorrow. Perhaps with a few hours of variation in hours of daylight across the globe, but basically, for us all, our year is made up of four seasons, and one life is made up of three seasons: yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
The spectacular is in how we choose to view our life, which makes the difference between hope and despair.
So no matter if you’re the low man on the totem pole, look upward one rung at a time. Achieve our mission for the day with the understanding that what we do today will build on what happens tomorrow. And what we accomplish tomorrow will merge into the next level of progression…into future generations.
Embellish reality with the uncommon ideal. Be courageous and imaginative, or we will be bound by a common definition of reality and future.
Most of us are already ahead in the game. Our existing is already sufficient. So, there’s really nothing to worry about.
Imagine worker ants who can lift thousands of times greater than their own body weight, or a mother octopus who has the inner strength to sacrifice herself to starvation in order to take care of her young.
And we will realize that there is no fear that can’t be fought. And no resilience from failure that can’t be self-taught.
If the strength of spring rain is offset by its periodic summer dryness, and the goodness of the sun is offset by its periodic cloudiness, so is the strength and good of success offset by its periodic failure — so that we could keep learning to do better.
Let’s draw from the strength, goodness, and lessons of Nature. Most of which we have learned since kindergarten!
