【英國留學】英國公立寄宿學校 UK State Boarding School 居英權子女可考慮入讀︳陳筱芬

近年到英國的留學生都選擇入讀英國的私立寄宿中學，可是普遍學費都十分昂貴，不少留學生家庭都難以負擔。不過如果你子女有居英權，便可以考慮免學費入讀英國公立學校──其學費比私立的相對便宜，但它們提供的教學質素絕不比其他的遜色。據筆者所知，成功進入英國首十名大學的學生中，為數不少是畢業於英國公立中學，由此可見英國政府中學也有頂尖名校的選擇。
英國的公立中學約有一千多所，大部分是日校走讀學校。但有所不知，其中有三十八所英國公立中學有寄宿設施，學校提供寄宿環境和傳統學科給十一至十八歲的英籍學生，適合有居英權子女身分申請。由於學費由政府資助，家長只需要支付住宿費用，每年住宿費用約港幣十二萬至十五萬元。但要注意公立學校寄宿學位數量較少。就如圖表中所顯示，一般學校如全校有一千名學生的話，寄宿學位只有三十至七十個，競爭較大，同學應提前辦理入學申請。但如果你仍未身在英國的話，為子女申請英國公立學校是要考慮以下幾點：
1.考慮入學年齡能銜接當地教育制度：英國學制的學校，五歲才能就讀Y1（一年級）；從小學到完成中學，是六年加七年，共十三年。不少香港本地小六畢業生，如插班入讀英國當地學校，一般按年齡會報考第八班，而不是第七班。但要注意英國當地學校公立學校招生年級一般是第七班、第九班、第十二班。
2.了解心儀學校文法學校（Grammar school）、Academy、Comprehension school和Sixth form college的分別。
3.以英國當地校網區（Catchment area）地址申請學校。
4.如考Grammar school中學，子女有必要考11+考試。11+考試通常在英國的小學六年級初（十歲）進行，其結果決定孩子是否被文法學校 / 私立學校的七年級所錄取。11+考試成績拿到所在區教育局，一般前二百名可以任選當地的Grammar學校，然後按成績和居住遠近等等其他條件錄取。
